Agreed re: lynchings. It wasn’t just evil-minded crackers picking a poor, poor darkie at random. There was always a good reason the locals felt justified in killing someone — usually a rather heinous crime, as you say. And it wasn’t just blacks who were lynched: about one-third of all persons lynched were white. Like the Inquisition, lynchings have been ridiculously exaggerated.
