If I were to speculate I'd say that the FBI went to the Italians and said the Russians were trying to penetrate the Trump campaign and could they help with counter-intelligence. The Italians agreed, and deployed Mifsud. Mifsud eventually realized that the FBI story was a falsehood, and that he'd been hoodwinked into participating in a coup attempt by US intelligence against Trump.

When that became clear, Prof. Mifsud decided to take a time out.
