A Boston talk host just had a caller about 15 minutes ago say something like “gee,I hope those protesters who were paid with cash were all given a 1099 form”.

A few years ago you only have to report them if the pay is over $600 per year. And had to pay for the blank form from the IRS. But most people don't know about it; companies and private foundations should know about it. I doubt not knowing (ignorance of the law) is an excuse though. And maybe the rules have changed since then.

A local church got around it by declaring my daughter's wages for child care an independent contractor. I didn't see how you can be classified as that when it wasn't regular work.

I'll have to check if we should be filing for people who do odd jobs for us. You have to ask for their SSN, name, etc.
