A Northwestern University doctoral student who beat cancer was one of six people shot to death over the weekend in Chicago, gunned down by a stray bullet when he walked into the middle of a gunfight just four hours after arriving in the city to start school, police and his mother said.
Shane Colombo, 25, was killed Sunday in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago while on an errand to buy clothes hangers, said his mother, Tonya Colombo of Menifee, California
"He was a bright, beautiful, amazing son. And he was so loving," the tearful mother told ABC News in a phone interview minutes after identifying her son Tuesday afternoon at the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office in Chicago.
Shane Colombo was fatally shot about 8:25 p.m. on Sunday, when he got caught in the crossfire of a gun battle between two people, according to officials at the Chicago Police Department. He was shot once in the abdomen and taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, Illinois, where he died, police said.
Police were working Tuesday to identify suspects in Colombo's killing, but no arrests were made.
He was one of a half-dozen people shot dead in Chicago over the long Labor Day weekend, police said. The other homicide victims ranged in age from 18 to 41 and included two women.
Tonya Colombo said her son had just arrived in Chicago to live with his fiancé, Vincent Perez.
"I was very concerned about him coming out here, and he was killed within four hours of being in the city, four hours of stepping off that plane," Colombo's mother told ABC News.

“The 25-year-old Southern California native had just moved into a condo close to Northwestern University, where he had been accepted into a prestigious psychology doctorate program. After a long-distance relationship with his fiance Colombo in New York, his future husband in California the couple were going to have a home together for the first time in three years.”
He was among at least 27 people shot in Chicago over the Labor Day weekend. He and four others were killed.
When they really play up a particular story ..that is usually an indication there is another story behind the story...like he’s a “dreamer”?
I wonder if he ever uttered the argument that Chicago gang crime is a right-wing overblown talking point.
So here we had a mentally, morally, and spiritually diseased person going off to study psychology. I have observed that many people who go into psychology and psychiatry are themselves nutters.
Yeah, I rented an apartment in a less-fashionable section of Rogers Park for three months back in 1977. I felt safe there.
That figures. Everyone who goes into psychology/psychiatry does so to figure out what's wrong with themselves.
Disclaimer: I have my share of PSYs on my transcript...
“Congrats to the Black Gangbangers in Chitown, they bagged a twofer, White and Gay.”
Which I suspect is the only reason for this story. Had he been White and Heterosexual, I doubt anybody other than his family and friends would know about it.
The bullet that killed this guy was fired and went directly where it was aimed.
The shooter may not have intended, or maybe even cared where he was shooting, but the bullet was not out simply flying around looking for a place to land.
There is very bad stretch along the lake and other nearby areas.
Those parts of RP, Uptown and even Evanston are bad and have been for years for reasons you can guess.
Uptown was one of the shitholes I lived in while going to school in Chicago. Woodlawn was another. Hyde Park goes downhill east of 55th street particularly around Harper Court though I haven’t been there in years. I see no reason for it to have improved.
My guess is that he was preparing an apt east of Sheridan Drive unaware of the danger lurking in the shadows.
When they closed the Projects the vermin spread throughout the city. Section 8 housing makes the problem worse since the neighborhood is dragged down.
The government was willing to pay me 1900/month to rent to Section 8 tenants. I said “thanks but no thanks.”
I watched a brand new building go up, look good for a brief time then it was just another rat hole.
We don’t have “unaffordable housing” we have unaffordable tenants.
Everyone who goes into psychology/psychiatry does so to figure out what’s wrong with themselves.
Uh, someone who is moving clothes into a new apt.
Don’t blame him for getting shot.
Rodgers Park is NOT a park.
I remember taking a course in abnormal psychology many years (50) ago, and the students got a good laugh as he described abnormalities. He was describing himself and/or his children, whom we knew.
Rogers Park is home of Loyola, just a few miles from Northwestern, a hub on liberalism.
There are places you just don’t go to in Chicago. I shudder at the idea of tourists driving thru the city, and stopping to get gas off the express way in these POS neighborhoods. Where as places like New York and LA have homicide conviction rates over 75% and the National Ave somewhere around 65%, Chicago has 28%. Then you hear the liberal democrats mouthing off that the gov’t needs to do more to get people jobs, and to poor more money into the communities...Forget the idea of police law enforcement.
It’s a toilet.....
Chicago is filled with nice people. Having lived there for over 50 yrs, I know where to go and where to avoid. It is a beautiful city filled with high culture, particularly music.
If the National Guard were to be deployed in three neighborhoods the shooting would almost entirely stop. But that would require a governor with balls unless the President does it.
My old neighborhood had crime statistics lower than your town I would estimate.
It would be a story just from the 4 hours angle.
So, I live in Chicago and went to grad school at NU just like this guy and actually waited at this bus stop in the middle of the day many, many times. Something is missing from this story. None of this makes any sense as to being a “random” shooting. No doubt, Rogers Park IS a dangerous neighborhood and I never walked on the street in it after dark for that very reason but this doesn’t sound like something that was random. The gangbangers and other bad guys there do not target random people at the bus stop. They target each other. Over turf. While turf battles can and do break out anywhere, this story is messed up. It wasn’t a “stray bullet” as some reports have said. This guy was shot more than five times. That doesn’t sound like “caught in the crossfire” to me. It’s also possible that he just didn’t know, ‘hey, don’t got out in Rogers Park after sundown’ since he just got here but everything the cops are putting out looks like some type of struggle occurred. There’s video of three suspects running away that a nearby bank security camera took that the cops put out this morning. Nothing about this makes sense as random crime as it happens in Chicago.
