Ive devoted much of my professional life to the study of political campaigns, not as a historian or an academic but as a reporter and an analyst. I thought Id seen it all, from the bizarre upset that handed a professional wrestler the governorship of Minnesota to the California recall that gave us the Governator to candidates who die but stay on the ballot and win.
But theres a new kind of campaign underway, one that most of my colleagues and I have never publicly reported on, never fully analyzed, and never fully acknowledged: the campaign to destroy the legitimacy of the American news media.
Bashing the media for political gain isnt new, and neither is manipulating the media to support or oppose a cause. These practices are at least as old as the Gutenberg press. But antipathy toward the media right now has risen to a level Ive never personally experienced before. The closest parallel in recent American history is the hostility to reporters in the segregated South in the 1950s and 60s.
Then, as now, that hatred was artificially stoked by people who found that it could deliver them some combination of fame, wealth, and power.
Some of the wealthiest members of the media are not reporters from mainstream outlets. Figures such as Rush Limbaugh, Matt Drudge, and the trio of Sean Hannity, Tucker Carlson, and Laura Ingraham have attained wealth and power by exploiting the fears of older white people. They are thriving financially by exploiting the very same free-press umbrella they seem determined to undermine.

Fake Journalist
Imagine that, the fascists who protect their slanderous talk with armies of SWAT teams and colluding with the FBI would want to destroy us owning guns defending our speech with a 30 round magazine
I. Am. Stealing. That!
When 90% of the media are propaganda activists for the left; you lose the honor of using the words ‘reporter’ or ‘journalist’. You’re just an activist.
Right, because what are they going to do? Exactly what they’re doing now but MORE?
“...the campaign to destroy the legitimacy of the American news media.”
I’d say that the media have waged a campaign to destroy the legitimacy of the American President, and that they started it first.
And then Ben Rhodes, Obama’s brain, admitted that he used the PRESS to sell us lies.
But only the spin doctors at Fox reported that. Sheesh, these people are amazing. BRING IT ON CHUCK!
There is no way Trump could EVER hope to destroy the American mainstream media’s credibility as well as the MSM has done itself. They need to look in the mirror when they ask why no one believes them anymore. Whether it was carrying water for a clearly corrupt Hillary Clinton, trying to hide behind the First Amendment to run a sex tape of Hulk Hogan for fun and profit or to give a “sports” award to a man who stopped competing in track and field 40 years ago because he got breast implants and started wearing dresses, this is the state of today’s American media and NOBODY, nobody, did that to them but themselves. https://news.gallup.com/poll/195542/americans-trust-mass-media-sinks-new-low.aspx
“The idea that our work will speak for itself is hopelessly naive. “
On the contrary. Your “work” has spoken, and about ten percent of the country pretend to believe you.
The LugenPresse media are great at claiming they “proclaim truth to power” that they hold rulers to account.
Then they cry like little girls when someone calls them on their lies, their distortions, their false stories, their bias.
The fact is, they are Power, and they help the Swamp avoid accountability.
You’re right. What Rhodes and Eric Holder did was despicable but neither one is going to be remembered much by anyone that lives outside of Washington. But trying to publicly humiliate Hulk Hogan by running a tape he didn’t even know was being made of him having consensual sex? And then having the editor of the site that did it testify, under oath, that he’d run a sex tape of a child under 12 if that person was “famous” to get clicks? And then that media outlet had the nerve to try to hide behind the first amendment? That’s the kind of thing that’s so visceral that every person who hears about it will remember it and hate the outlet AND the MSM brief-filers who stood behind it. The other side of that is where was the media outrage when TRUE INFRINGEMENTS of First Amendment rights happened? Like when Holder labeled James Rosen, then of Fox News, a “criminal conspirator” for doing his job and reporting on the Pentagon? Yep, silence from every media outlet that wasn’t Fox.
If Todd was a real honest, competent and accurate journalist, he wouldn’t be attacked. End of Story!
...the campaign to destroy the legitimacy of the American news media.
Methinks the press has been hoist by its own petard.
Savage was talking about chuck Tood tonight. Says chuck never even graduated college. Got where he is through his elite connections. Also he was a former democratic “operative”. The leftist elites are morons and hypocrites and their house is caving in.
Media destroyed its own credibility with forged photos, forged memos, staged exploding gas tanks, fraudulent town hall questions, journo-list collusion on daily talking points and ‘press’ conferences, and on and on....
How queer Chuck forgot about the Democrats’ assault on Dan Rather at their 1968 convention.
Chuck - this was before many millions more woke up to your lies and deceit! my guess trust in media has moved into negative territory! lol.
18 April 2016: NBC: Bad News: Just 6 Percent of People Say They Trust the Media
by Associated Press
Just 6 percent of people say they have a lot of confidence in the media, putting the news industry about equal to Congress and well below the public’s view of other institutions. In this presidential campaign year, Democrats were more likely to trust the news media than Republicans or independents.
But trust today also goes beyond the traditional journalistic principles of accuracy, balance and fairness.
Faced with ever-increasing sources of information, Americans also are more likely to rely on news that is up-to-date, concise and cites expert sources or documents, according to a study by the Media Insight Project, a partnership of The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and the American Press Institute...
Nearly 90 percent of Americans say it’s extremely or very important that the media get their facts correct, according to the study. About 4 in 10 say they can remember a specific incident that eroded their confidence in the media, most often one that dealt with accuracy or a perception that it was one-sided...

One can’t “destroy” what doesn’t exist. You’re not legit, you’re Fake.

Antipathy toward the _President_ has risen to a level _we’ve_ never experienced before, and you started it -you and the “reporters” at Fox you “admire” - in the first Fox debate.
>>”The closest parallel in recent American history is the hostility to reporters in the segregated South in the 1950s and 60s.”
Who were Democrats. That’s why they called it “the solid South”, you idiot! Many of whom. by the way, you later held in the highest esteem - Robert Byrd, Al Gore Sr., Bill C’s “mentor” - J. William Fulbright, and others.
“Fake but accurate” was considered an ‘acceptable’ answer to fraud and yellow journalism.
