In 2002, after switching parties to become a Democrat, Larson ran unsuccessfully for Lieutenant Governor of Maryland, on the ticket with Democrat Kathleen Kennedy Townsend. He and his wife, Sally, resided in Annapolis until his death.

2002 was a very strange time to become a Democrat.

At least he was good enough to tell the voters when he made the change.

I did not realize that this friend was that Larsen. Selecting Larsen as the running running mate for Kathleen Kennedy Townsend was part of the reason that she lost in very liberal Maryland. He looked like the stereotypical country club Republican. It was bizarre that she thought her being a Kennedy was enough to get her elected. She had been Lt. Governor but accomplished nothing.
