For the clusters of onlookers, besuited power players and three former presidents who had all traveled to Washington National Cathedral, the muggy day was a historic opportunity to memorialize the life of Senator John McCain, who was remembered as a deeply patriotic war hero, a former Republican presidential candidate and a scrappy, humanly flawed, ultimately idealistic lawmaker.
For President Trump, it was Saturday.
In the many discussions about how to mark his life that Mr. McCain had with his staff and family before he died, he had made clear he did not want Mr. Trump to participate in anything they planned. So as Mr. McCain was eulogized in the presence of much of the American political establishment, Mr. Trump, pointedly uninvited, engaged in what by now is a familiar weekend routine. He sent a series of angry tweets aimed at some political adversaries, then left the White House to play a round of golf at his resort in Virginia.

Most of the nation could care less, only the deranged elites cared and tried to use his funeral to attack Trump.

It would have been better if DJT had a MAGA rally instead of playing golf today.
You can also go back to the George Bush presidency. McCain had contempt for him for 8 years. Just a bitter old man and a two time loser at running for president.

All I ever needed to know about McStain was how he treated his first wife. Left her when she had been injured in an accident (with 3 small children to take care of) to marry a younger, not injured, rich heiress whose father was involved in racketeering with beer distributorships. This article unfairly impugns Trump supporters, many of whom have pledged to keep the grass on the grave green, by taking the time to water it.
The headline is typical NYT dishonesty. It is intentionally worded so that those people who are unaware that Trump was not invited will draw the conclusion that Trump chose to play golf INSTEAD of attending the funeral. Technically the truth, but a lie nonetheless.
