Authorities across Thurston County continue the search for those responsible for the brutal killings of 13 cats in the area.
The Thurston County Sheriff's Office confirmed a 13th cat was found mutilated Thursday just outside Lacey.
On Monday, Olympia police found the 12th cat when they responded to the 3800 block of Pacific Avenue when people nearby reported finding a cat brutally murdered. The death is believed to be linked to 11 other cat killings.
The reward for information leading to the person responsible has increased to $36,000.
Animal cruelty investigator Erika Johnson said cats that have been brutally killed and mutilated have been found on display in public spaces, such as parks or front yards.
“As far as the numbers, it’s probably the worst I’ve seen in my career,” said Johnson.
Johnson first saw a cat killed in such a way in October, recently, however, there’s been an uptick in dead cats found in the area.

We had a series of pet mutilations and we thought it was coyotes, but after reading your description it could have been an owl. We have those as well as bobcats.

I believe an owl took my cat. It was night and there were two cries in different locations. I looked for days and never found her. A horrible experience.
Owl kill out in the open: Cat on back, paws and head cut off but in place of orientation, rib cage cut open with entrails gone.

I guess underneath those plastic platitudes and phony smiles beat the hearts of cat killers.
I didn’t see the kills, but that sounds a whole lot like what was going on. The locals here were convinced that a satanic cult was ritually killing house cats and leaving them out on lawns.
This is Orange County CA suburbia, but it’s cheek by jowl with wild land that once featured Grizzly bears. A lot of people moving here think it’s as tame as their old neighborhoods and it’s not. We have coyotes, raccoons, owls, hawks, bobcats, skunks and the occasional mountain lion... you just don’t often see them other than the hawks.
Get wildlife biologist involved.
We had one kill a rabbit on our front lawn and there was too much left. I have never felt so sick and I cried for the bunny. I love animals way too much. And, yes, I know, it is the way nature works but, I hate coyotes.
Heard a neighbors cat killing a rabbit one night and I never want to hear that again!
We have that problem in our neighborhood. People are frequently posting about coyote sightings around my street and the area, sometimes carrying a cat, and are finding cat carcasses on lawns. People crying about their missing cats. There are a dozen feral cats that frequent my backyard that I'm friendly with, and a couple of them have disappeared over the last few weeks.
Yup, might be coyotes.
Trained forensic experts can, but I doubt anyone with actual training and experience has looked at the remains. You can bet “animal cruelty investigator” Erika Johnson doesn’t know spit from shinola, but she is enjoying the center of attention.
Something similar was true for bull calves and old cows. Unwanted calves went to the beef buyer, but non-contributing cows went into the freezer in meal-size packages. And pigs . . . well, you know. Root, pig, or die.
But no cruelty nor mutilation before death. We have excess cats because weak-minded owners are not willing to do their own killing of unwanted offspring. But some of them are not unwilling to kill their own pre-born infants. Sometimes selectively.

Yep. Drove up to an ATM one evening (this was when I still had some money!). A Raccoon was eating a sandwich somebody had thrown down right by the ATM.
The Raccoon gave me a look like “Don’t EVEN THINK about stealing my sandwich”. He was serious, too.
I kept the window rolled up as much as I could to do my ATM business. Trying to watch him and the ATM screen at the same time.
Big secret: I wasn’t actually after his sandwich. Just some cash. Don’t know what kind of sandwich it was but maybe he had a bankcard, too. No word on whether his password was “Bosco”.
Local news up here has been reporting for weeks that several of the cat’s corpses were dismembered and, ahem, “artfully displayed” in public places. These are being done by some guy. Or, though more unlikely, an extremely sadistic and talented owl.
This is the third year in a row that I have had a pair of tiny owls that spend their days on perches only 5-6ft. above ground under my partially covered patio. My small backyard is all trees, ivy and native grapevine.
If I’m quiet, I can walk out and get within 3 feet of the male, which is only about 9” tall. We look at one another and I talk softly to him, then turn away and return to the house. ....If I startle them, they quickly glide away through the tree branches and, unlike most birds, THEY ARE SILENT.
I’ve found remains of dead rats, small snakes and large lizards some mornings when I open my rear entry garage door, so those tiny owls are beneficial and eating well. I only wish they were a little larger so they could dispatch the dozens of squirrels (I also get rabbits and possums). ....I live in a quiet neighborhood in the DFW area and only have a 1/4 acre lot, but the small wildlife is everywhere.
Lived in Japan for a number of years. It was determined that most successful and would-be serial killers were cat killers in their ‘developing’ years. It is how they practiced dealing with the pain of the victims and the tamping down of their own emotions concerning torture and death.
We used to have FReepers that defended eating dogs... better days — not that I’m dog eater.
