They were on the back page and I never missed them.

My favorite was “Will somebody tell Andy Rooney that it isn’t necessary to scream at waiters? We’re doing the best we can.”

The hard copy was free for at least ten years and there are 8 million NYers. This, and other very good newspapers like the wonderful and long gone New York Press (a conservative rag), were available free in these little kiosks along the streets.
