In a corner of northwestern Syria packed with nearly 3 million people, the government and its opponents are preparing for a final, bloody showdown.
The campaign for Idlib, the opposition's only remaining stronghold in the country and now a refuge for over a million displaced Syrians, is likely to be the last major theater of battle after seven years of brutal civil war.
It is also potentially the most dangerous.
The U.N. and aid workers are bracing for disaster, warning that up to 800,000 people are in danger of renewed displacement if a government offensive gets underway. A massive military buildup in nearby areas suggests an assault at least to regain parts of the province may be imminent.

“Our policies in Syria have been dead wrong. “
Absolutely correct.
US interests are best served by the Syrian government asserting control over the entire territory of the country.
As for the remnant fighters, they are Islamic terrorists and always have been. Sure, there’s at least 40 flavors of them. And Turkey, SA and the US have been their sponsors and supporters since the war began. Especially Turkey.
They do, in fact, need to die.
Unfortunately, there are a couple of million civilians in the very same ground space.
The proper way to get it done is infantry supported by precise air strikes.
The cheap way is artillery and carpet bombing.
And it’s obvious the course Syria and Russia will choose.
And it’s absolutely no different than how the US handled Japan and Germany during WWII. I cannot blame them for doing what must be done.
Too bad they will not drive to the heart of the beast in Ankara.
I predict the Syrian government to launch a sarin gas attack within the week. And they’ll use that special sarin. You know, the kind that a bandana and a canteen of water fixes right up. /s
Wonder post Mariner. We are so busy with Stormy What;s her name and mundane sports crap- we are missing huge international entanglements that must be avoided.
I understand the white helmets have arrived in Idlib with their television cameras...should be a pretty good show.

These are mostly non Syrian Muslims imported into Syria courtesy of US/UK tax dollars. As Syria took back most of the country, Syria allowed the terrorists and their families safe passage to Idlib.
Remember that Israel also allowed safe passage through their country to Jordan where Canada, UK, Germany and some other stupid countries said they would take the Al Qaeda associated ones known as White Helmets.
We need to close our illegal military bases in Syria and get the hell out.
