There are two distinct protocols for awarding the Medal of Honor. The first and most common is nomination and approval through the chain of command of the service member. The second method is nomination by a member of the U.S. Congress, generally at the request of a constituent.
I know of no precedent for the President of the United States to issue a Medal of Honor on their own!
“The posthumous award would recognize the senator’s extraordinary heroism during his five years of captivity in North Vietnam, when he was tortured mercilessly, leaving him disabled for life.”
His “heroism” while a POW has been called into question viz the “Songbird” appellation he was tagged with after he got back to USA.
Even in death, McCain is “protected.”

No Friggin’ Way! I was involved in resubmitting COL Carl Eifler, former Commander of OSS Det 101 in Burma, for the Medal of Honor. COL Eifler, also known as “The Deadliest Colonel”, was recommended for the Medal of Honor by Gen. Joe Stillwell, but the recommendation was lost/misplaced at about the same time that COL Eifler was seriously injured. We discovered the error in 1989 and worked with Leon Panetta, COL Eifler’s congressman at the time, to get him resubmitted, but it was disapproved.
You would have to read the book, “The Deadliest Colonel”, written by Tom Moon, to appreciate what a travesty it would be to award John McCain the MoH.
For what?

Even with the most laudable interpretations of McCain’s deeds, nothing he ever did in his entire life would qualify him for the Medal of Honor.
Most of McCains awards are from being shot down and held as a POW. 1 - Silver Star, 1- Legion of Merit, 3 - Bronze Stars, 1 - Air medal, 1 - Navy Commendation Medal and not one for his actions during the fire on the USS Forestal in 1967

To me the funny thing about this obsession the media has for mclame is that I remember back to the early days of the 2015 primary season (spring of 2015?) when the media thought that Trump was dead in the water because he said mclame wasn’t a hero. They were so SURE Trump was dead after that. How’d that work out for you, media?
What EXACTLY is the AWARD for destroying so many jet fighters singlehandedly? (his own single plane crashes & his crash on the aircraft carrier that destroyed all the planes there).
What EXACTLY is the award for killing HOW MANY sailors on that Aircraft Carrier he crashed on?
What EXACTLY is the award for treating other POW families with such disdain?
What EXACTLY is the award for treating your VP choice as running mate in the manner that you did?

I thought it was the “congressional medal of honor”...the president might put it around one’s neck but I thought it was something the legislature had to vote on.(?)
I am not in favor of turning the Medal of Honor into a plain vanilla medal.
