It's not a new concept. That's true. There were the French Partisans, the Montagnards, the Contras, the Mujahideen (who beat the Russians like baldheaded stepchildren),...

But the theory posed by the Russians is interesting. According to them, the rebels in Syria are killing their own kids with chemical weapons to claim victimhood against Assad's soldiers...or something.

Anyway, if what you're saying is true, then there are no good guys in Syria. Maybe continuing balance there is a good thing. The more, the merrier.
