Lived almost exactly between the High Street Kensington and Notting Hill stations pre-9/11. Loved it and didnt have any concerns about safety and the neighbors were fastidious about the properties/ gardens/street. I found that my afternoon at the carnival was overwhelming back then. At that time, it seemed like Portobello Rd offered a significant number of reproductions and was fixated on tourist items. I havent been back to London since and now my kids want to go. Its ridiculously expensive and Im dragging my feet but I love the city of my memories!
I (no longer) want a riot of my own!
All part of living in a big city. Right Saddiq?
Yeah, thatll stop em.
Don’t they want to experience more of that vibrant diversity that we hear is so enriching? What are a few riots and murders compared to expanding one’s horizons by learning more about other cultures?
Well, the implied mayhem didn’t happen. The general assessment after the two days of Carnival are over was a fairly low-key event by Notting Hill standards. One minor stabbing injury, 156 drugs-related arrests, 69 offensive weapons, 9 sexual offences, 373 arrests in total. Some minor late-night brawling. With a million on the streets over the two days,(300 tons of litter cleared by the following day) those aren’t big numbers. Perhaps the rain damped down the excesses - though as it was the first serious rainfall after three months of a record dry, sweltering summer, perhaps the rain might even have livened things up a bit.
