One question I have always had is how hard would it be to duplicate crude oil,or gasoline and why hasn’t it been done by now?

It has.

One example is Pennzoil Synthetic....says right on the jug "Made from natural gas". They can also make gasoline from NG. (see: NG-GTL "gas to liquid") there are at least a couple of processes available.
