I did that 30 years ago (oi—I am old), and it was truly HARD. What really helped was a note card I rolled up like a cigarette and used just to give me the comfort of inhaling.
Felt silly every time I used it, but am convinced it did help me to quit “cold turkey”!
Now, living in S. Oregon where the smoke has hidden blue skies for months, I am so grateful I did quit because the smoke hasn’t bothered me at all!
I’m old too!
I might give your idea a try!

A harmonica works pretty well too, plus, you'll learn how to play the blues-harp...Keep it the same place you put your smokes.
