They're just trying to find a means to do it publicly so they can claim they did it legally.
I think I remember Trump got audited every year for quite some time.
Trump may have spoken to several races of extraterrestrials at Area 51 according to unnamed anonymous sources.
I get the feeling that the secondary goal of Mueller is to ensure that nobody wants to work on Trump’s re-election campaign.
Who would want to go to jail for 300 years for helping to elect Trump. Having your last 40 years of life scrutinized inch by inch?

I understand that it is reasonable to want to avoid civil war / revolution. But living with tyranny is worse than going to war.

Somebody ought to look at Mueller’s tax returns for the past 20 years or more (to the Whitey Bulger era).
Just make sure it’s not Lois Lerner or Koskisen doing it.

Trump has always gotten audited.
If they did that, Trump would have been forced to release his real returns. If those returns revealed nothing incriminating, the Rat strategy would have failed spectacularly, considering the media frenzy that would have resulted from the leak of the fake returns.
On the other hand, if the real returns turned out to be as bad or worse than the fake ones, then his campaign might indeed have been damaged.
It's almost certain that they already knew what was in his returns, knew that there was nothing bad, and knew that this issue would disappear like a fart in a windstorm. They wanted to keep the suspicion alive that there was something bad there.
Hence, no fake returns.
They would just claim that it was Trump who modified his returns so that he wouldn’t look guilty. The media would have gone to defcon 1 supporting the TPTB who released the fraudulent return and we would have Pol Pot in a Pant Suit as POTUS, imo.

The only thing anyone with any money at all knows about his tax return is that it is wrong.

If they want to find something actionable on any 1040 or corporate return they can. It is just a matter of scale. This is why our tax system is nothing but extortion.
He said it during one of the debates,... but instead of every year, it was something like 15 times audited, and he was currently under audit as he stood on the debate. Hence... BHO spying on him and auditing him! And even if BHO only audited him, this might be unprecedented in US history.
He also said (and HRC stood there mute) that no other presidential candidate knows more about the tax code than he does.
My thoughts back then was that Trump may not like some of the rules, but he plays by the rules. He has demonstrated that even with the injustice foisted upon his presidency by some of the rogue leftist federal judges - he goes through the process.
I believe that Mueller had the entire collection of them. These were professionally prepared, and gone over in detail, there is nothing there but they will try to embarrass Trump.
