I read not long ago that South Africa is now, for the first time in modern history, importing food. Shades of Zimbabwe.
It seems to me something like this. Five hundred years ago, the African method was “Cut, slash, burn.” The women did the farming, and they had to raid other tribes because they could not raise enough food to support themselves.
Then came the Dutch, who found large amounts of land vacant due to inter tribal wars. With massive agriculture input they fed all of Africa and exported plenty.
Now the blacks have again taken over, and are reverting to “Cut, slash, burn” programs in which they will not be able to support a population that now is maybe ten or twenty times what it was five hundred years ago.
