This should put an end to The Intercept once and for all; they burned their source on a leak of Top Secret classification. Incredible.

Reality’s a bigger idiot that I imagined. Facing the charges she was indicted for, you don’t hire a member of the local slip-and-fall bar, you need someone with national security and/or military experience. Guessing she couldn’t afford a better lawyer, or attorneys with those credentials told her to throw herself on the mercy of the court.

This much I’m certain of: Mr. Nichols, Esq., likely drained Ms. Winner’s bank account of every dime before her sentencing. And Winner doesn’t seem to care about the quality of her representation, or the length of her sentence. She was all smiles getting out of the car (in jumpsuit and shackles) before her sentencing. Looks like she’s gained a few pounds, too. Jail (and the companionship it provides) must agree with her.

I disagree. The reason why the corrupt upper echelon of government can get away with it is that the entire government, and in this case a defense contractor, is corrupt and full of insufferably self-righteous twits who think their nobility puts them above the law. Throwing some of these simpletons in prison may help modify the activities of some of the other sheep. I think her sentence is about right to accomplish that end

You hire a guy who does DUI and traffic tickets? But maybe he was the best she could afford.

E-4's live paycheck to paycheck. Her brief employment with a federal contractor wouldn't have improved that situation much unless she was selling classified information..

She was a former Air Force linguist with fluency in Urdu, Pashto and other languages of the Asian sub-continent. That skill, coupled with a TS/SCI clearance, gave her a contractor’s job that paid over $100,000 a year. Don’t know what kind of lifestyle she led, but cost of living around Fort Gordon (where she worked) is very affordable. If she was reasonably frugal, she could have socked away a fair amount of cash in only a year or two.

“Odd that a black lawyer would wear the Confederate flag on his lapel.”

That’s the Georgia state flag.

Pointed noted, but it wouldn't take very long to burn through savings. Assuming the lawyer fee is $500 per hour hour. 40 billable hours would be $20K.
