Republican leaders in the Senate stepped in Wednesday to block Sen. Rand Paul’s latest effort to defund Planned Parenthood, an issue popular with the GOP base that some say could help energize voters for the midterm elections.

The Kentucky senator late last week signaled that he would offer an amendment to the appropriations bill funding the departments of Labor and Health and Human Services, the relevant legislative vehicle for the Planned Parenthood funding ban. Supporters said that it would need just a majority to win.

Late Wednesday, Paul moved to add his amendment to an opening on a so-called “amendment tree” which has limited spaces for pending amendments.

In its place, according to insiders, was a placeholder amendment that changed funding in a program by $1. “It’s only purpose was to block Paul,” said a Senate insider.

The GOP leadership has the power to unblock the amendment tree and allow a vote on Paul's plan.

President Trump has proposed cutting funds to Planned Parenthood. The agency gets federal funds for its women’s health care but not abortion, though polls suggest that Republicans want the money train ended because it does abortion or refers to others that do.

Like you said.....unless it’s a hurricane....etc....

Fox News did a segment, earlier, on the one year anni, of Harvey.

Over 10K folks are STILL not back in their (flooded) homes.

Word is that Ted is out doing rallies here in Texas all weekend.

He needs to just stay in Texas for the next two months and beat the Fake Mexican into a bloody pulp.

He won’t miss much going on in the senate chambers in DC - other than Trump sniping and navel gazing.

Pick a senator. Any senator.

Except for a single handful, all talk and no action.

Especially the turtle.

Okay...I thought, for just a sec, you might’ve been talking about POTUS being the naval gazer :)

I’m no Midge fan, however, in his defense....he has gotten a record number judges confirmed.

Here’s a listing of Yert’s accomplishments, provided by LS...

Many here have problems with Yertle. I think for the past two years, while not saying much, Yertle has quietly kept every promise he made in public.

*He said he’d bring Ocare repeal up for a vote, and did. He never said it would pass.
*He said he’d PASS tax cuts. And did.
*He said he’d confirm Gorsuch. And did.
*He has, without saying anything, confirmed a record 26 Circuit Court judges for this point in a president’s first term.
*He has promised he would CONFIRM Kavanaugh. He will. Collins and MurCowski are on board and we have the votes.
