Rock legend Steven Tyler has sent a cease-and-desist letter to the White House demanding that President Trump stop playing Aerosmith songs at his rallies.
Tylers attorney, Dina LaPolt, sent the letter after Trumps Tuesday night rally in West Virginia, as first reported by Variety. The bands Livin on the Edge played as Trump supporters entered the Charleston Civic Center.
LaPolts letter, a copy of which was obtained by Variety, notes that Trump was previously asked to stop using Aerosmith songs twice during his campaign.
Mr. Trump is creating the false impression that our client has given his consent for the use of his music, and even that he endorses the presidency of Mr. Trump, the letter reads.
LaPolt writes that Aerosmith fans have mistakenly believed that Tyler endorses Trumps presidency and expressed as much on social media, and says that Trumps use of the song is a violation of the Lanham Act.
LaPolt said in the first two cease-and-desist letters, which were related to Trumps use of Dream On, that the issue was neither personal nor political, but an issue of copyright. Tyler is a registered Republican.
Trump said in 2015 that he had found a better song to play instead of Dream On, and boasted that the scandal gave Tyler more publicity than hes gotten in 10 years.
A number of musical artists have requested that Trump not play their songs at public events, including R.E.M., Twisted Sister and Elton John.
and that's hard to do.
I just listened to it - I’ve never heard it before.
Was it a hit?
What a whiner.
I’m no lawyer, but I do believe if Trump (or his rep) bought a copy of the song(s) and are not using them for monetary gain, then Tyler has got no legal leg to stand on to make Trump stop using the music.
Saw them in 1985, THEY SUCKED, stevie was so high he couldn’t sing. The concert is legendary in my hometown for HOW BAD they were and how much they SUCKED.
Ronnie James DIO opened for them and he was FANTASTIC, Best band I’ve ever seen.
Half way thru aeromith, the crowd started chanting DIO, DIO, DIO, I was going to see them and ozzy the next night in LA and decided not to.
70 year old rock stars are annoying.
I’ll listen to Dream On but I refuse to watch that creepy Steven Tyler. They’ve never been on my list of favorites except for that song.........;)
no leg to stand on... rush limbaugh had someone try that with his signature intro song...
they’ve been paid, no standing in court.
Federal law would indicate otherwise. Make for an interesting court case.
