We need to straighten up that this person was not a German. He was probably Polish (just by name alone) due to his location.

See #47. He was from southeastern Poland which was annexed by the Soviet Union after it invaded Poland in 1939. The territory is part of Ukraine today.

The entire linked article has been re-written since I read it last night.
The original article said he was born and grew up in a farming town (did not recognize the name) in Germany.
This article says he was born in Ukraine.
Bottom Line - if the first article had said he was born in Ukraine, I would not have written my Comment.
