This guy was 22 years old when World War Two ended.
He was born in 1923 and lived his first 8 years in the violent political and economic chaos of post-World War One Germany.
In 1933, the Great Depression reached its catastrophic peak, Hitler was elected, and Germany descended into a totalitarian police state.
He probably worked in a fire brigade or on an AA gun installation in 1939 and 1940.
He was drafted in 1940 or 1941, after eight more years of indoctrination in Nazi schools and youth camps.
He was 20 years old when he participated in the mass slaughter at Treblinka.
How many of the readers on this thread would have had the courage and the serenity of mind at age 20 to throw down their rifles and refuse to kill innocent people?
Not many, I think. Not me, anyway.
