I think Kennedy Steve did retire, and I believe he was a ground controller (not sure about air traffic). The English, French and Italian pilots were always too cool to get rattled by Steve and his Noo Yawk patois.

Thanks. I listened to a ton of his recordings on the tube of you, I cracked up when he would try to imitate the accent of the foreign pilots, especially the French. But when things were dicey, he was the calmest and most empathetic.
