VIENNA: The UN's nuclear watchdog said it had not seen any indication that nuclear activities in North Korea have stopped despite its pledges to denuclearise.
"The continuation and further development of the DPRK's nuclear programme and related statements by the DPRK are a cause for grave concern," said a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), referring to North Korea's official name.
The report, published late Monday (Aug 20), by the director general of Yukiya Amano is to be submitted to an IAEA board meeting in September.
In 2009 Pyongyang expelled IAEA inspectors from its Yongbyon nuclear site and has since refused to allow IAEA inspections on its territory.
The watchdog has stepped up monitoring through open source information and satellite imagery, it said.
"As the Agency remains unable to carry out verification activities in the DPRK, its knowledge of the DPRK's nuclear programme is limited and, as further nuclear activities take place in the country, this knowledge is declining," it said.
Between late-April and early-May, there were indications of the operation of the steam plant that serves the radiochemical laboratory at the Yongbyon site, according to the report.
However, the duration of the steam plant's operation was not sufficient to have supported the reprocessing of a complete core from the experimental nuclear power plant reactor, it added.

"According to the copy of the report obtained by The Yomiuri Shimbun, the IAEA condemned North Korea as the circumstances violate U.N. Security Council resolutions that require the nation’s abandonment of nuclear and missile programs. The report gave a detailed description of the reality of the nation’s nuclear development based on satellite observations and information analyses over the past year.
A graphite-moderated reactor is a facility to produce weapons-grade plutonium by burning uranium fuel. After burning uranium fuel — which takes years — spent fuel is removed from the reactor, from which plutonium may be extracted at a reprocessing plant.
According to the report, discharge of vapor — a sign of the reactor operating — was confirmed at the Yongbyon graphite-moderated reactor, as well as draining of warmed cooling water. Its operation has been suspended several times after the currently used nuclear fuel was put into the reactor in December 2015. This time, the burning of the uranium fuel is believed to have been conducted for a longer period compared to in the past.
Meanwhile, signs of operation were confirmed at a steam heating facility, located next to a reprocessing plant in Yongbyon, from late April to early May. However, a longer operation period is needed to extract plutonium from spent fuel. Thus the operation could have been part of preparation to start the reprocessing plant, or aimed at maintenance."
I don’t trust anything from the UN they despise Trump.

Trump needs to halt all negotiations with NK right now. All sanction put back/stay in place.

It looks like Kim’s gambit is to make some non-nuclear concessions like returning remains of U.S. soldiers, and allowing a few steps toward normalizing relationships with SK. When Trump’s hand is eventually forced by Kim’s non-compliance with dismantling his nuclear capabilities, then Kim will point to his “cooperative concessions” and try to paint Trump as the aggressor for undoing the little progress that has been made.
Kim is attempting to play Trump but his moves have been anticipated. Trump had to try the diplomatic route because if he didn’t he would be accused of rushing into war without giving diplomacy a chance.
Trump was also in a position where he too had to buy some time. Confronting NK militarily BEFORE the fall elections was not going to be productive for him in the long run. He will put maximum pressure on Kim AFTER the elections.
pretty obvious. When Bush was in power the IAEA and Hans Brix had no problem with Iraq. Now that Trump is in office they act tough against N Korea. Didn’t hear a peep from them when Obama was in office.

I don’t recall the IAEA’s public assessments of The Bamster’s “progress” with North Korea (or Iran, for that matter.)
This is the same group that says Iran is doing nothing toward nukes and that Iraq was doing nothing toward a nuke capability under Sadaam. Totally unreliable group. While what they say about NK may be true, I’ll not believe them until two other reliable groups say the same thing. Kinda like how I view the NYT, WP and other liberal fake news media.
