I used to think that.
However, observing what has actually happened has convinced me that the real lesson of South Africa from the past 40 years is not that apartheid was bad, but that multiculturalism/diversity in a democratic setting is a terrible idea that eventually always blows up, one way or another.
Both are bad in their own ways.
Like I said, I think the best possible outcome for South Africa was to have a good man, like Chief Buthelezi control post-Apartheid SA, rather than Mandel. Reagan met Buthelezi and came away very impressed with him.
