It has been a long time - I used to drive up 128 to Lowell and passed that exist many times. The one I forgot was OTIS, I believe it was still active in the 70's and possibly into the 80's. The commission on which bases to close was a real battle to eliminate unneeded bases and that battle took place in the early 80's if my memory servers.
I got to Otis in 1979. It had closed in 1974. It was closed when I got there, but part of it was designated Cape Cod Air Force Station.
In 1981, we converted several old family housing units into single airman quarters. Three men or three women to a 3 bedroom house. We had our own little area on our own street. Partied all the time in the Summer: BBQ, drinks, etc. Everyone was good friends. We only had 75 or so GIs at our unit; most married. There were around 15 or so of us single.
Had a good time!
