From the 'wayback' machine:
The Baltimore Colts opened the National Football League draft yesterday by selecting Stanford's all-America quarterback, John Elway. But hours later his father, Jack, said that Elway ''will never play for Irsay or Coach Kush.'' And, at a news conference in San Jose, Calif., his hometown, John Elway said: ''Right now it looks like I'll be playing baseball with the Yankees. It will be a couple of days, or maybe even two weeks, before I make the final decision. We haven't ruled out football, but it doesn't look good right now.''
I count myself lucky that I was in the stands to see Elway lose his last college game. The Big Game against Cal at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley that ended with The Play.
During the previous possession, Elway passed on a 4th and 17, and then went on to score a touchdown. Everybody in the place thought that John Elway had done it to us again, but it did not turn out that way.
I wish I could say I followed what happened next, but it was complete mayhem. Nobody knew what happened until they fired the cannon on Cheapskate Hill, and we all looked at the scoreboard.
