A new paper, just published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has received a lot of media attention. The attention is justified because the paper paints a very grim picture of the climate and what humans may be doing to it.
There are many really important insights from this paper. The authors wanted to know how feedbacks in the Earths climate will play a role in shaping the climate in the future. By feedbacks, we mean a change in one part of the climate that then causes another change, which in turn may cause another change, and so on, potentially setting up chain reactions.
Feedbacks are really important because they are changes that the natural system makes without being caused directly by humans.
A couple of things to note. First, we dont actually know when these various feedbacks will be tipped. Scientists have educated guesses, but we really are not certain. Also, we dont know how long they will take to tip. As an example, lets say we pass the tipping point for a collapse of the Amazon Rainforest. That doesnt mean it will die off immediately, but it means its death is likely or certain. But how long will it take? Years? Decades?
It just means humans should be more focused on taking action now to avoid triggering the tipping points. We dont know where they are so lets be safe and stay far away. The problem is, humans collectively are not doing enough. There still is time to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. But, it is far too late to avoid all climate change it is already here. What we are hoping for now is enough wisdom and will to at least stop short of going off these cliffs.

Whether you believe in a sovereign God or not has no bearing on the existence or any effect of so-called climate change. Whether or not you believe in so-called climate change has no bearing on whether it exists or not. But going into an argument over so-called climate change with God as your only evidence is going to make you the subject of ridicule. It is all I can do not to ridicule you myself.
These people never cease to amaze. Three words: Le Chatelier’s Principle.
Don’t ‘leak’ that to Hank Johnson or Maxipad Waters, they will introduce a bill to mandate it! Waters credits Hank with preventing Guam tipping over!
China is responsible for at least 50% of the filth we see in the air...and elsewhere.
Ya know, my ex-wife just went on a rant about the straws and all the plastics floating in the giant mass in the Pacific Ocean. So much so that she ordered “reusable straws”, and she now carries it everywhere with her. This is also the woman who won’t eat any tuna until it’s ALL dolphin safe (which, it is in the US). The sad thing is that she doesn’t realize that the Chinese (and Russians, and many of the third world nations) are the ones doing well over the majority of the pollution. That the net sum of the US pollution contribution is negligible in comparison.
Well, there’s a reason she’s an EX-wife, after all.
Oh hum... another global warming hoax...
Hogwash.
Bill Klinton was pushing him off as a climate scientist.
I was being funny...
