Nebraska becomes the first state to use fentanyl in an execution
Washington Post ^ | 08/14/18 | Mark Berman

Authorities in Nebraska on Tuesday morning used the powerful opioid fentanyl to carry out a death sentence, an unprecedented move that came as the state — which just three years ago briefly abolished capital punishment — completed a remarkable reversal and resumed executions for the first time in nearly a generation.

Nebraska experienced a series of firsts Tuesday morning: the state’s first execution in 21 years, its first lethal injection and the country’s first death sentence carried out with fentanyl, which has helped drive the opioid epidemic. The execution was even more unusual considering the state’s very recent history, which saw its legislature abolish the death penalty in 2015 before voters reversed that decision the following year.

At the center of this was Carey Dean Moore, the 60-year-old inmate executed Tuesday after spending more than half his life on death row. Moore was sentenced to death for killing two Omaha cabdrivers in 1979. He said before the execution he did not intend to stop it or want anyone else to intervene, to his lawyer’s evident chagrin.

Nebraska had scheduled Moore’s execution to begin at 10 a.m. local time at the state penitentiary in Lincoln, the capital. The first of the four drugs used by Nebraska was injected into Moore at 10:24 a.m and the coroner announced his time of death at 10:47 a.m., corrections officials said.

No matter how ‘eased’ his transition to the other side, when he gets there it is hellish ... FOREVER.

I have a hard time understanding what all the fuss is about.

Morphine, fentanyl and other drugs can be fatal if given in a large enough dose. Just do it and have done with it.

What you say is true, but you definitely want to make sure the heart stops beating and this is where the potassium chloride comes in.

You don’t want to give the bleeding hearts any more talking points than is necessary.

“First in Fentanyl”

Nebraska’s new license plate slogan.

They have more than enough fentanyl and or heroin to kill them all. Why waste money on the KCl. Whack them with enough “H” and they won’t wake up.

As a side note to this thread, please consider the following.

Regardless that Pope Francis wants capitol punishment stopped, Matthew 10-29 indicates that this execution wouldn’t have happened if G-d had not willed it.

John 19:10-11 similarly indicates that the state wouldn’t have had the authority to execute if G-d had not given the state this authority.

Insights welcome.

...with fentanyl, which has helped drive the opioid epidemic...

This statement is absolutely ignorant and complete bullshit. Where do they come up with this idiocy?

I suggest that hemp be used for executions in the form of a stout rope. From my EMS experience I know starting an IV can be tricky and at times nearly impossible. England’s long serving hangman, Albert Pierrepont, maintained that any delay in the execution process was in itself needlessly cruel. He prided himself on being able to manacle the condemned, set the noose and hood and spring the trap in less than one minute. Properly done hanging is quick and presumably painless if the neck is snapped. This whole lethal injection process is time consuming and often uncertain

I think the author meant and should have said, "which has helped drive the epidemic of fatal opioid overdoses," which is certainly true. My wife's got a cousin who's son punched out on smack laced with that stuff.

I guess in a way this is good because if the Governor’s pardon is issued after the injection they can jack the inmate with NARCAN.

I’ve been saying that for many years.

That’s how most Dentists suicide. They sit in the chair, put the little nose mask on and then turn on the gas.

Drift off to sleep and die, with no pain or gore.

I say they should drill a hole in their heads and suck their brains out w/o any anesthesia - good enough for unborn, innocent babies so it should be good enough for actual worst of the worst types....

Too messy ... the serial murderers in abortuaries use a probe to puncture the back of the alive, sensing unborn, THEN stick the suction is to remove the soft cranial contents. An alive unborn can learn at 20 weeks. It has been proven. Think of what that implies with these ghouls slaughtering those children and the dead souls defending such evil. Abortion is the single most important ‘rite’ to the demoncrat party and its constituencies.

I’ve often described abortion as the holy sacrament of the true democrat believer.

It’s also the only core principle in which they will not be moved away from.
