So according to Wikipedia, before 1563 the celibacy rule didn’t exist.
That doesn’t sound right to me.
If priests could not marry, then any inheritance they would get would be transferred to the church. After a few generations, that’s a bunch of property.
I wonder how the Holy See has become so wealthy? They are no different than the mafia.
