It was customary when I was low-level staff in a major military command to give a certain award to officers completing a commanding officer assignment in one of the subordinate commands. One such officer was a mediocre leader at best and did not particularly distinguish himself, the command, or the military service. It was decided he would get it anyway. John McCain is receiving such an honor with the naming and there is no reason to go overboard with it.
the sooner the better for me,,
“no reason to go overboard with it.”
Agreed. But Trump could have found a few kind words to say.
If you wanted cheap gestures Trump isn’t your guy. He’s real. If he doesn’t like you he’s not going to pretend because it’s “Presidential”. I for one didn’t know McCain’s name was in the bill. Considering this is for the defense of the nation it’s an affront to its citizens that it places one man above all others in its name. Not that Congress really cares about citizenship.....
refusing to be released so long as his buddies were being held.
That's rich..
I prefer to leave the judgement of McCain's military service to those who served with him. Even though he was my Commanding Officer for several months, I don't feel that qualifies me in any way to judge him on his conduct as a Naval Officer. I leave that to others, and much is known of that.
However, as a citizen, I take extreme issue with his conduct, and that of his staff in his execution of his duties as a Senator. But most of all, his involvement in this "Trump Dossier" business really shows who he is.
The meeting he was at where McCain was approached by Sir Andrew Wood (former British diplomat to Russia and close friend of Christopher Steele) I think is highly illustrative.
Here is what Wood said when asked about it: "...Wood told McCain that Steele had compiled a report, while careful to note the information was unverified, which the former British spy "strongly believed merited a thorough examination by counterintelligence experts..."
If that was the case, this should have been subjected to "Five Eyes" scrutiny, as any intelligence of this kind should have been. It deliberately wasn't, because that would have tipped off a lot of people who would have seen it as bunkum.
Instead, the people behind this dossier TARGETED McCain for this, and for good reason. They understood full well how someone like McCain was ripe for exploitation due to his personal pettiness, vindictiveness, and frank stupidity. The "Maverick" would serve them well.
When asked about it, McCain said: "...I did what duty demanded I do," McCain wrote, adding that anyone who disagrees with his decision can "go to hell..."
The fact that his "duty" coincided with his personal desire to do harm to Trump and his administration is not mentioned. Well, McCain might well beat to Hell any of the people he wanted to put the screws to.
Trump is not a conventional politician. McCain is a nasty, vindictive a$$hole who has acted against Trump at every turn. Trump has raised repeatedly at his rallies how McCain, without naming him, killed the opportunity to repeal Obamacare. Who can forget McCains thumbs down vote that delighted Schumer and the Dems? It was pure political theater.
We are just beginning to find out what McCains role was in facilitating the insertion of the Steele dossier into the governmental system. We do know he sent one of his aides to London to pick up a copy, which McCain delivered to Comey. We dont know what other actions he may have taken. Trump probably does.
McCain has not been in Washington since last December. However, he has been issuing highly critical statements against Trump and his policies, especially on Russia and North Korea. He also made it known that he does not want Trump at his funeral.
Congress put McCains name on the bill, no doubt to piss Trump off and diminish Trumps contributions to increase defense spending. Should Trump praise McCain under the circumstances? I wouldnt. Just having McCains name on the bill is praise enough. Why offer praise to someone who has tried to destroy you professionally and personally? And no one would take it seriously anyway.
See my post above at #48.
Everything Trump does pisses off CNN.
I, for one, can’t wait until McCain assumes room temperate. I will never say a good thing about that treasonous POS. Also I support Trump in not mentioning him during this speech. But hey he could of repeated the don’t like people that get captured remark. I would be ok with that.
I based it on accounts like this one, appearing in the conservative Washington Examiner:

You’re dead wrong. I respect someone who stands by his convictions, not lie through his teeth because it is politically correct to do so. To suggest that McCain, who has done everything in his power to bring down the president should be honored is outrageous. President Trump did the RIGHT THING by not mentioning McCain, who was a traitor to his “buddies” as many have attested, and has ridden the Hanoi Hilton to a lifetime of honors. I and many others think McCain is a traitor to the values Americans hold dear. They don’t need enumerating.
it’s Hyman Roth all over again.
Special thanks go out to Senator John McCain who has done everything he could to tear down my Presidency since I was elected. America will never forget the sacrifice you made for the deep state.
"Thank" McCain...for WHAT? A spending bill that wastes tens of billions on war machines we don't need, along with the usual pittance for our troops? Why? And since when does Congress NAME appropriations bills after anyone??
I can’t wait until the name “John McCain” disappears from the language.
He is like some recurring nightmare about a house guest that refuses to leave.
Trump did mention McCain or rather allude to McCain’s 2 am vote for Obamacare.
I cheered when Trump did not reference McCain at signing, nicely played. Hope McCain was watching
Me thinks he looks like your garden vanity drunk.
Acts like it too.
