You’re right, without a doubt, as a general matter.

But I’m sure you’ve been present at many eulogies. When someone has died, or in this case is about to die, the rules are relaxed. The kind, presidential, thing to do would have been to find a few kind words to say.

...the fact is that the guy is on his deathbed, and spent years in the Hanoi Hilton, refusing to be released so long as his buddies were being held.

And the fact that he went on to become a "prince" in the most advanced era of human history for the rest of his life puts "paid" to anything he's owed....including respect.
