That's not the "peace sign." That's the "V-for-Victory" sign. At least as Churchill used it.

The peace sign is the so-called "dove's foot," found on the tie-died t-shirts of aging hippies everywhere. That was indeed derived from the semaphore signs for "ND" -- "Nuclear disarmament."
