True. However, Stockton of all the central California towns was about the stodgiest. Unlike others it had a high percentage of original settlers from New England, as witnessed by the unusually (for California) large number of brick houses. It had an economy that ran off of being an administrative and financial hub for agribusiness. In conversations with a coworker from there he said it was an open secret the C o C types and the local elites liked things the way they were and wanted no significant growth. So I still an interested in how this place seems to have gone to h-ll.

Interesting post. I had no idea about New England in California and I’ve often wondered how one town will have brick houses and another stone and another wood. There is a reason for everything!
