What still astonishes me is that Nelson Riddle could arrange a song for Frank Sinatra, then turn around and arrange the same song for Ella Fitzgerald, and it would be a completely different arrangement.

And then he would arrange it in a totally different manner decades later for Linda Ronstadt.

What a gift!

Arranging is such a complex discipline!

I could arrange “on the fly” using MIDI and Multi-Track recording, but to do it for REAL instruments is a whole other matter. One has to know and appreciate the timbre and range of each instrument, how much is too much and how much is not enough, with no over-dubbing, track-bouncing, doubling, or editing.

It is an awesome talent.
