CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Some North Carolina elementary school teachers were initially told they would lose their jobs if they didn't pass a Math test they call difficult and unfair.
Teachers say they recently got a call from their school district informing them they have another year to pass the test. Hundreds of teachers have failed the test repeatedly. Teachers argue what's on the test has nothing to do with what they teach in a classroom for students in Kindergarten to 5th grade.
"Never in a million years would we even come close to teaching some of the topics on this test," veteran CMS teacher Krista Ricks said.

So the next day I dropped by the class, apologized about having a son who was so serious about his grades and showed her the problem. I assumed she would laugh, mark it correct and change the grade.
That's not what happened. She said he got it wrong. I did the math and said, 'See, it's right'... She pulled out the teachers copy of the math book and showed me the answers in the back of the book. The publisher had a misprint... so I said 'that happens - and the answer in the back of the book was wrong. She got angry and asked if I thought I was smarter than the people who wrote the book. At that moment knew she didn't know how to do simple math.
I also knew she would take this out on my son because she was not only stupid, she was mean... and I backed off. I'm not even going into all the notes sent home to me - and other parents - with massive spelling errors... etc.
My position from that time forward is that teaching should be a full time position, (40 hours a week) and teachers should be paid like they're professionals and BE professionals. Now the professions is a sinecure for people too lazy or stupid to work in real jobs. And yes, I have known heroic teachers who not only teach but buy supplies out of their own money and work many more hours than they're paid for ... but I also know they're the exception and many more teachers haven't even updated their tests materials in 15 years.
We don't see this one the same way. The 'teachers' of today are the folks who would have been clerking in a dime store in my day... we're pulling in the bottom of the barrel and our kids deserve better.
Most of the 'teachers' we have today are over-paid ... waaaaaaaay overpaid. Fire most of 'em and change the system.

You are wrong. Those are SAT level questions. And I am in no way opposed to such tests having loved taking those tests- 1400 score 55 years ago.
Of course, it could be that it is designed to have a low median score so that you can more accurately test the upper percentiles.

a couple times of year, I help proctor tests at our local community college. Usually for HVAC stuff. Around 2010, they had to change the whole testing room around, instead of normal walls, they went to all glass walls, and put the chair/desks about 10 feet apart from one another. They installed lockers, whereby you put ALL your stuff in the locker, and you get a key. You can take nothing in the room with you. We supply the pencil for the test.
Why was this done? The teaching exams. They were the worst offenders of cheating. Over the top cheating. Blatant cheating. Usually on their cell phones.
A friend of mine proctors those tests, and he told me that the first two years of doing this, the people taking the test would rant and rave and actually throw things around the registration area (I hate to say this... but he said it was always black women), screaming, threatening lawyers, whatever, but making a scene, so they had to then have security there on those teacher accreditation testing days. He said they would eventually just leave, they wouldn’t even bother to take the test (they would just go take it somewhere else I reckon).
He said it doesn’t happen too much anymore, as the teachers know the routine, and they know what to expect when they get there.

Many SAT problems are basic HS math but you time is critical.

For those of us who do not live in a teacher’s lounge echo chamber, what is a PRAXIS? It sounds like a Japanese electric car.
The days you are speaking of were when students could actually be disciplined, unlike today.
During those days Dunbar High School in D.C. was one of the best HSs in the country, all Black. Today’s schools have been completely ruined by the Left. But that is before 80% of Blacks are born out of wedlock. That was before they became cafeterias, that was before the gangs intimidated and persecuted those showing any inclination for learning. Did teachers want chalk boards remover from the walls.
Like most drastic solutions yours is ineffective and does not address the actual problem. My high school life was idyllic.
Teachers in the Inner Cities are not overpaid when you factor in combat pay. You should consider that these teachers are more like Prison Guards than teachers. Their real function is keeping some of the thugs off the streets for a few hours.
It looks like a teacher today basically just needs to know how to plug in a computer. Hate to be so cynical but I’m a grouchy old man.
Intelligence levels. Snort. In any case, we’re not talking differential equations here. In a healthy kid with no learning disabilities, the kind of stuff on this test shouldn’t pose a problem for learning. If the kid wants to learn and has a teacher capable of teaching it.

Maybe that why our students lag in SAT and ACT testing and have difficulty in competing internationally...
It looks a lot like the kind of math I was doing as a high school freshman. Maybe ever junior high. And I went to PUBLIC school.
The questions are designed to test your aptitude for college and many are much harder than basic high school math.
You are deluded. I once taught elementary math and it was scary the level of stupidity/ignorance.

As far as most schools are concerned Adv Algebra, and a couple of other Advanced classes was as high as these classes went.
I’m in Wake Co, NC and I homeschooled my two children. Oldest is 28, majored in Computer Engineering at Grove City College. Works in his field. Youngest will be 25 this month, majored in Illustration at Savannah College of Art and Design, designs hospitality art for high-end hotels, restaurants and businesses around the world.
This kind of hoo-ha in NC is just one of the reasons I chose to not send mine to public school.
