I count some Turks among my friends. Unfortunately what Ergodan said DOES resonate with Turks. They are willing to bear almost any burden or battle, so long as they see it as “us against them”. Nationalistic pride is massive in Turkey, but used to be strictly secular. The big fear is that Erdogan has successfully merged that pride into an Islamofascist mode.
100 years since the Turkish war of independence and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.
They will likely dig in out of pride.
Erdogan is a talented politician, who will say whatever works, and can sell it well. In the past, economic results strongly supported his sales pitch. Now he is fighting the tide.
The downturn in Turkey this year is really much sharper than I would have thought - worse than the US experienced at the start of the Great Depression. The stock market had been down 40%, and the currency had dropped 40%, in the first 7 months of this year.
Their currency just dropped 15% in one day.
