College applicants are being rejected for merely following the Alex Jones account on Twitter, a digital privacy expert has warned.

Bradley Shear, who runs the Shear on Social Media Law blog, claims one of his clients was rejected from a prestigious college after an admissions interviewer scoured the student’s social media account and found he followed Alex Jones on Twitter.

While one of my legal clients (a 17 year old teen) was being interviewed by one of the most competitive colleges in the country he was asked why he was following Alex Jones on Twitter. My client, a teenager expected to talk about his stellar grades, top test scores, amazing extracurricular activities and volunteer work, but the interviewer focused on who he was connecting with online. My client had never “liked” or re-tweeted any of Mr. Jones’ content. His alleged “transgression” was that he followed Mr. Jones on Twitter. That was it.

Tell you kids (and yourself) to never let you views or likes be known in public.

Always use a pseudonym. On you FB or other social media page, keep it very sanitized. Assume that anything said, posted, or liked will be used against you in a court of law.

Then, when you have an opportunity, use it against them. Start actually fighting.

To late for most of us here. Not to late for others.

Most employers do now. Many have as part of their application process a background check that does a deep dive in all social and online presence.

Background checks are not about parking tickets and DUI arrests anymore.

I want to add that my son (in southern CA) is very pro-2A. I don’t know what he looks at on the internet, but this is interesting. He also works for the Veteran’s Administration at this time.

Just looked at a liberal follower of me on twitter. He is following a whole bunch of resistors, trump haters, Stormy Daniels, and Alex Jones.

FReepmail me if you want and let me know your ID on TWTR. I might like to follow you, too. ;-)

A criminal background check I can understand.

Not allowing someone in college because you are deranged Leftist lunatic and want discriminate against Trump supporters?

Really you think that is acceptable?

The employee doing the “what is your political stance” check should be fired.

“Acceptable” and “Reality” don’t have to be aligned. A cop in CA was fired for wearing a “Proud Boy’s Girl” shirt on Facebook.

When you hear “Corporate culture” realize that some of thing things they screen for are personal beliefs. And it should go both ways.

But also acknowledge that venting your spleen in public is an excellent way to be not considered for a job.

It’s good that people understand that their social media affiliations WILL be scrutinized by colleges, and companies when they’re applying for jobs. Once out there, it’s forever.
