[KY-6] McGrath [D] Campaign: Calling Combat Veteran soft on borders "beyond insulting"

Conservative Washington Political Action Committees are pumping money into Kentucky’s Sixth Congressional District and attacking Democratic Candidate Amy McGrath. The Congressional Leadership Fund released three ads on Wednesday in the district attacking Amy McGrath for being too liberal, soft on borders, and against the tax reform plan.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports the radio ad paints Amy McGrath “as liberal as Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders”. The first ad features local mother, Hannah Thornton, who benefited from the GOP tax plan. In the ad, she criticizes McGrath for being opposed to “a tax cut for working moms.”

The second ad goes after McGrath for her stance on immigration, highlighting donations from members of Congress who support abolishing ICE. “McGrath’s support for open borders will make it easier for drugs and criminals to flow into our country,” the ad states. McGrath’s campaign manager, Mark Nickolas, is responding to the release of the negative ads in the district.

“It’s clear that Andy Barr understands that the voters aren’t interested in re-electing him, so his only option is to try to destroy Amy with lies and attacks, with help from his party’s super PAC. But the voters already know Amy and she’s the most popular figure in the district. This is why voters hate politics and are rejecting Andy Barr.” he said in statement.

Nickolas went on to respond to the claim that McGrath supports open borders.

“The idea that a 20-year combat Marine, who defended our nation on the morning of September 11 and then fought Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan and Iraq to protect our homeland, is now soft on borders security is beyond insulting. No one is going to buy that.” he said.

Notice in the full article her campaign doesn't deny it - nor denies she's being bankrolled by them - they just say they aren't allowed to point it out because she previously served in the military.

This is Kentucky House District 6 - which is a perennial battleground district that has changed parties several times over the years and is currently held by Republican Andy Barr, who narrowly defeated incumbent Ben Chandler (D) in 2012 (ironically because of the new gerrymandered counties put in the district that were designed to keep Chandler there for life - those counties instead voted against him). Barr won re-election against weak opponents in 2014 with 60% of the vote and in 2016 with 61% of the vote. But now, the Democrats are back to fully contesting the seat again.

This race will likely be a bell weather to signal how election night will be going come November.

John Kerry served in Vietnam. Benedict Arnold served in the Revolutionary War. Plenty of combat vets go on to become traitors. Fortunately, most do not.

Military service doesn’t shield your views from valid criticism.

The Left sure loves to wrap itself in the flag or Constitution when not using them as toilet paper.

Prior military service is a lousy predictor of future political performance.

Being a combat veteran (which I am also, according to thregs) does not translate to a complete pass on one’s political views.

I would question a “20 year combat Marine” who happens to be female. She may have 20 years in uniform, but females in combat is a very new thing for the Marines.

Females in combat are a liability and a fraud.

No arguments. But the Marines have not had the problem until quite recently.

Seems the Dems are running “combat vets” in multiple places. The Republicans need to nail them on supporting the current Democrat/Socialist platform.

Just another way we need to take it to them: Rats, you no longer get to define the debate and what is and is not appropriate to say about you. F’em. We need to crush these bastards
