It was always kind of a maverick state. Horrifically exploited by the logging industry, and then they went bonkers in the other direction.

In is the most environmentally “aware” state in the union. So naturally almost every hippie in the country ended up there.

My first trip to Oregon was in the very early 1970s, and when I got off the plane in Portland I thought someone had passed wind. Someone gigantic.

It was the paper mills, I soon found out. Horrible pollution from these things. It wasn’t like that when I went back 30 years later.

And still today it takes your breath away when one of those unstoppable trucks loaded with colossal former trees goes barreling down the highway. No matter how much of a non-greenie you are, you can’t help realizing that a few days ago those were majestic trees.

I’m not making excuses for Antifa. Just trying to answer the question of What happened to Oregon?

It’s freaking beautiful up there. My old engineer boss had a house in Bend that we helped wire for networked computers. He paid us for the drive, the working time, and filled our truck with 12 packs from Deshutes Brewery on the way back.

My comment was mostly to poke at the sane, rational Oregon residents.

We have to put up with the California comments, after all.
