In sum, many within the FBI, the CIA, the DOJ, the NSC, and the State Department may have been involved in the greatest scandal in American electoral history, by directing agents, informants, and employees to help one campaign to harm another — and then, even after the election, to work to undermine a sitting president.
And the question: Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? Moreover, how do we even get to the point where the American people will trust not only that this will never happen again, but that anything even can be done about it? Because at the moment it appears that the level of corruption is so great that the corrupt appear to have realized that nothing need be done about it, that they can merely sabotage and wait out the Trump administration and then get back to business as usual.
And by "the corrupt" I specifically include the media organizations who have profited handsomely from the leakage and subsequent publication of sensitive information entrusted to those "guardians". Corrupt enough people and there's no one left to stop it. So to the original point of "how do these agencies regain the trust of the citizens?" the answer to that is "They don't have to, they know they don't have to, they revel in that power, and the American people were the last to know."
Unless there is serious jail time for those who broke the law and lied these agencies will never have any credibility. So far they have shown they couldn’t breath and blink at the same time if it was a voluntary response.
They missed multiple chances to get bin laden in the 90’s. They missed 911 and wailed give us more control and power and we did. The result we invade Iraq to get WMD’s and find few if any. Then they illegally start monitoring all Americans and still miss the Boston bombers with the Russians telling them, hey look at these guys!
They routinely lie under oat with no repercussions, they ignore subpeanas from the peoples branch of the government the congress and they openly and then secretly weaponize the intelligence and law enforcement agencies of the government to influence and try and control and throw a presidential election and then do a frame up job that is half-assed and then do a half-assed cover up.
If you are an FBI, CIA, NSA etc... agent you are a part of the problem, not the solution. Twenty years ago I would never have typed that sentence but now they behave like the NKVD and the mafia. Corrupt banana republic type behavior and we are lecturing the Norks and Chicoms on ethical behavior by their government agencies? WTH!
The results of all this corruption and criminal behavior: early retirements, resignations maybe, re-assigned anything but people being held responsible for their actions and we are supposed to believe a DOJ/FBI spokesman when they start talking about equal justice under the law? Seriously!
