Trump is Fighting Back Against Iran

Iran has chosen to sow discord and destruction throughout the Middle East and President Trump is fighting back.

As of midnight, harsh sanctions on Iran have kicked in as part of the administration’s strategy to keep Tehran from achieving its goal of building a nuclear bomb.

The Obama-era Iran deal did not moderate the regime’s actions as was hoped. In fact, it resulted in an economic gift that served to stoke Tehran’s involvement in Syria and Yemen. Iran continued to be a friend and sponsor to terror groups throughout the region.

Now, the sanctions ban most transactions with Iran’s central bank; its network of ports and insurance companies; the purchase of Iranian sovereign debt; and trade in gold, graphite, aluminum and other precious metals.

The renewed sanctions will squeeze Iran economically, almost immediately. Most foreign businesses will not invest in Iran and will pull out, opting instead to stay in the good graces of the U.S. A second wave of sanctions that will more directly target Iran’s petroleum industry is set to go into effect in 90 days. The civil unrest in the Islamic Republic of Iran is likely to gain steam as a result and that will compel Tehran to return to negotiations.

Scrapping the Iran deal is advantageous for the West. The time is right to increase pressure on Iran and President Trump is wise to exploit its vulnerabilities.
