Waving around threats to break companies up or regulate them as “utilities” because we were too lazy to keep tech options diverse years ago, and too stupid to not worship these bastards when they were rising up (looking at you FR Apple fanboys), is not going to happen. It isnt legal, constitutional, and it will come back to bite us in the ass.
Will it take money? Yes. Will it take people putting in sometime with no pay and not expecting a big cash payoff for a long time? Yup.
But 14 years ago the internet was awash in options, and it was BETTER OFF, so now we are going to have to start the long walk now.
There have been multiple search engines started to compete with Google. It's not simple starting a alternative. How well is Vimeo doing compared to YouTube? It takes years, even if successful, to do this. It's hard to get people to change ingrained habits for using certain sites. It now has people's email, calendar, favorited videos, etc. Stop being so simplistic as suggesting starting a alternative website.
This needs a authoritarian type approach from the top. We are in a war. We fight like they fight. The Left is no longer "liberal" nor "progressive". Watch the new movie "Death of a Nation". The Left is now most accurately called the Fascist Left. And to beat such a formidable foe, we have to fight like they fight.
