CCleaner provokes fury over Active Monitoring, user data collection

CCleaner has promised a slew of changes to its software in response to user criticism of active monitoring processes which are almost impossible to disable.

CCleaner, available in both free and premium versions, is software which performs all-around scrubbing and optimization of Windows, Mac, and mobile devices.

The Avast-owned software, available under Piriform, was the target of a cyberattack last year when hackers modified the Windows 32-bit edition of version 5.33.6162 of CCleaner, and version 1.07.3191 of CCleaner Cloud, in order to serve malware.

Use CCleaner at your own peril. To bad it used to be a good tool.

Still use it. Yeah I know it tracks things...that’s why it’s free.
Note they hacked the 32bit version. I haven’t been 32bit for over a decade.

ESET NOD32 is fantastic. Highly recommend it.

I’ve dumped Avast.

So far Windows Defender does ok. I try to use Linux for most Internet operations.

I still use it.

Just go into task manager and disable it when done cleaning.

Wash rinse repeat as necessary.

I run ESET on my Android phone and I remain virus-free.

A little trivia: Piriform means "pear shaped."

I use Windows Defender too. I was hoping someone chimed in that also used it. So far so good for me too. I used AVG for quite awhile but drifted away a few years ago.

In addition, I run Malwarebytes Pro daily, Super-AntiSpyware every few days and Stinger about once a month. It all seem to identify and block potential risks and keeps things clean. I also run Firefox with NoScript and AdBlocker Ultimate.

Avast doesn’t work well and can’t get it to block anything on IE.

Avira refuses to update on my comp through any search engine. The repair dude just put on Avast.

AVG killed my last computer. Flat out killed it dead. AVG refused to lift a finger to help. Mine wasn’t the only one because several people were posting about the problem with the same update. NEVER EVER use AVG.

Other than that rescue disc, I avoid AVG.

I trust CCleaner a whole lot more than Google or Facebook etc, etc. Ye got to pick your poison...

I dumped windows and as a result, I don’t have to worry about ANY of it!!

What a relief not to have to spend several hours per week doing computer maintenance. Unfortunately, putting things on auto slows things down.
