The Portland Police Bureau is preparing for a potentially violent showdown between dueling demonstrators Saturday, with a ramped-up law enforcement presence and checkpoints throughout the main protest area to screen for weapons.
Hundreds of people are expected to descend on downtown to oppose a march and rally organized by Joey Gibson and his right-wing group Patriot Prayer, which says it plans to bring supporters from around the country.
Those active in the movement nationwide say Gibson's so-called "March For Freedom" may become the largest right-wing demonstration in the U.S. this year.
"This weekend is starting to look like the biggest rally of the year that the far-right will hold. It could be combustible."
Participants in Patriot Prayer events and antifascist activist have battled in the streets during numerous confrontations in Portland. A face-off between the rival factions in June ended with nine arrests, multiple people hospitalized and police declaring the violent scene a riot.
"I continue to strongly reject the idea that violence or hate speech are legitimate means to a political end," Mayor Ted Wheeler said in a statement on Saturday's planned rally. "Chief [Danielle] Outlaw and I have serious concerns about the potential for violence at this weekend's demonstrations."

The Left doesn’t need any “counter” protestors available to be “dueling” (i.e., violent).
Which protestors? The evil racist bigot white nationalist fascists nazis or the evil hateful intolerant racist antifa blm democratic socialist fascists nazis. Will masks and helmets be allowed?
Helmets, masks, goggles and body armor allowed.
They will be screening for weapons (including axe handles) and explosives. The bomb sniffing dogs won’t let the M-80s through.
But you can bet once the first punch is thrown the Portland Cops will declare a riot and start clearing.
I expect at least as many cops, from all over the state, as “protestors”.
Multiple safe video recording locations to capture everything, and then post on YT and elsewhere to show which side is peaceful and which is not...
I prefer the old saying...”put down the tools and let’s mix it up, face to face.”

In a previous confrontation the Portland Police set up roadblocks in a manner that pushed the opposing protesters together, instead of separating them.
Violence? Why who would be committing such acts?? Perhaps hizzoner should consult with the “Antifa” thugs who cover their faces and then batter others with blunt objects.
Conservatives don’t need to cover their faces to express their views. The grounds are almost always kept very clean and do not cause harm to others.
The Antifa and other leftist crowds commit acts of utter cowardice (covering their faces) followed by acts of utter violence, followed be leaving the place looking like an acres wide and trash heap. Or, a block of downtown San Francisco.
The mayor says “we don’t want this here”. Ain’t the constitution a bitch??

I see the assumption that Patriot Prayer is a Fascist group as the protesters are anti-Fascist. Can somebody inform me if Patriot Prayer are extremists who support Fascism?
They are not fascists. They are not racists.
They are PROVOCATIVE right wing advocates.
Like Trump they seek to inflame their opposition. And they are darn good at it.
