THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

JEROME KERN

COVER GIRL

George Gershwin had died seven years earlier, and brother Ira finally found a partner for his lyrics, which turned out to be Jerome Kern. This was Columbia’s first Technicolor musical, and it rang the cash register for Harry Cohn in 1944. Gene Kelly was given total creative control, and the result was a number of innovations in the filming of movie musicals.

”LONG AGO AND FAR AWAY”

This is one of Jerome’s best known songs, classed among the immortals. Harry Cohn didn’t trust Rita Hayworth’s voice, which was serviceable, and decided to have a professional dub the song for her. That is one seriously seductive dance.
