Now that I read his old column I notice it all over the place in Big Box stores,sit down restaurants and every counter.

Probably brain change due to M-TV quick cut videos, then sudden song changes on music playlists,then instant changes on computer screen and finally smartphone with an icon and a sudden expectation of a new reply from the system. No thought or continuity of memory required, just tap with a finger again.
