President Trump made an unexpected phone call into conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh's show on Wednesday, where the two men focused almost exclusively on Trump's accomplishments in the face of some opposition.
"You have a lot of bad people in Washington," Trump said. "You knew that a long time ago. Frankly, before I knew it.
"I had no idea how evil some of them are, but you have a lot of great people too," he continued. "And outside of Washington you have the greatest people in the world."
Trump called into Limbaugh's show to congratulate the host on his 30th year of broadcasting. In a jovial, free-wheeling conversation, the two spoke at length about the economy, immigration and why Trump believes shutting down the government in September could ultimately be a positive for Republicans, despite little support for the move within the party.
The two men reveled in the low unemployment and high GDP numbers that Trump has overseen in recent months, despite having what Limbaugh called "seemingly the entirety of Washingtons political class opposed to you."
Limbaugh later asked the president if he has taken to leaning on advice from his close advisers in the White House, or if Trump is "still following your gut?"
"Well, I think its largely instinct. I have some great people. I really do," Trump said.
The president went on to suggest that he's still not completely happy with his group of advisers, which has been in a near-constant state of flux since he took office.
"We have some great people, and Ive made some changes," Trump said. "But were really close to getting a fantastic really just a fantastic group of people. We have some really great ones, and I think thats reflective on the success that were having as an administration."
Trump has highlighted Limbaugh's supportive comments on his Twitter feed in the past, including as recently as Tuesday.
"Rush Limbaugh is a great guy who truly gets it!" Trump tweeted after "Fox & Friends" played an audio clip of Limbaugh arguing the merits of a government shutdown.
Yes it was a great chat
Congratulations to both Rush and President Trump!
“Well, I think its largely instinct.”

I think so too and it’s great to have an American President with American instincts again.
LMAO.
Big ol chunk of Deep Red Meat.
‘Some in DC are evil.’ Is that a remarkable statement? It’s like saying the sky is blue. Some in DC are evil? Our president was being generous!
Do you realize how ignorant it sounds to continue to repeat that crap when you’ve just praised President Trump, who would fire them if he weren’t satisfied with what they are doing?
There isn’t a doubt in my mind that all someone did was dial 1800RUSH and BAZOOOOM!!!! Bo Snerdley answered and asked what they wanted to talk about and when the person ID’d himself as PDT, Bo just (automatically) hung the phone up and the dialer was persistent and on the 4th try BAZOOOOM!!!! Bo Snerdley again and Bo figured anyone that persistent MUST be PDT so he hung on the line for the required 45 min and connected them. ((Must I add s/sarc?))
WE all know that PDT just picked up the RED RUSH PHONE and said I will be on the air in 1min 20 and I have 42.4 minutes to spare this PM.
And Rush came back with Yes SIR!! Whatever you say SIR!!
Late to the party?
Sessions is not sleeping, so stop peddling that line
Try to keep up...
Highly doubt this was a “surprise” for both Rush and the White House.
Of course it was a set up. Trump tweeted about Rush yesterday and then ‘called him up’ today. Doesn’t take a rocket surgeon....
Are you nuts? If he wanted them gone they would be gone.
Wow !
Two of the greatest men in the world today just having a talk and discussing current affairs.
Not to be missed !
I love how Trumps love and admiration for the common man comes across in everything he does.
His sheer genius for property saw him become a billionaire, but his heart and soul will always be that of a common man,
30 years ago I was working in Madison, Wisconsin as a financial analyst. At lunchtime I left the office and walked out to my car and passed some colleagues. One of whom said “Hey, are you listening to that Rush?” I assumed the remark was an odd reference to the Canadian rock band. I get in my car and tune in WTDY, and there is this new program - Rush Limbaugh. I think it was one of the first broadcasts, but perhaps not the first, during that initial week on the air nationally.
I probably have heard some or all of about 90+% of his broadcasts since then. I made special efforts in the late 1990’s to listen to him over the internet, when AM radio signals in Atlanta couldn’t penetrate my office building. I would have a single earpiece with the cord running down my sleeve and plugged into the side of my laptop - away from the office door so folks wouldn’t notice I was listening.
In those days - radio stations were trying to figure out what to do with their websites, and only a few were streaming programs. At that point in time EIB must have had some limitaiton on broadcasting over the internet, because the San Fransisco station I would listen via had a setup that allowed you to continue to stream if you logged in before his show started, but would not allow you to access streaming during his show. So the trick was to log in 4-5 minutes before he started. Thus I was sitting in Atlanta, listening to local news and traffic in San Fransisco for 3-4 minutes before the Pretenders theme music kicked in.
He is the most remarkable thing in media, in my lifetime. I think he gets to shape political conversation in this country to a degree that no one else has. It’s just amazing.
Here’s to the next 30 years!
One of the initial syndicated stations for Rush was WXYT in Detroit. I started listening on his first day in syndication.
One day at work, one of our salesmen was in the office and I had Rush on the radio. He told me his best friend was Rush’s producer.
I told him to prove it and get me a personally autographed photo. He called the producer, during the show and a few days later, I got the photo. It’s framed and stored away somewhere.
30 years ago I was driving from southern Virginia to Boston. Caught this wild program out of NYCity. Guy named Rush Limbaugh. At party mentioned to folks that I had heard something remarkable. A truly adult newstalk program. Rush got a lot of new fans that month. Still has them.
Rush is a solid Trumper. Always has been.
Trump’s style breaks all rules, and it drives the elitists absolutely nuts.
