Me and another Marine, who is now a very famous public figure (all FReepers know him), were in a rifle company sent to Subic Bay in 1986. Talk about no morals. Every verb with "ing" at the end. Savage debauchery. I think we averaged 7 STDs at sick call every morning, but I'm fuzzy on that detail. I do remember the company 1st Sergeant got his bore punched. Our corpsman said the officers were given private sick call in their hooches so that they would not be seen by the enlisted men at sick call.

We were the only rifle company returning to Okinawa in anyone's memory that didn't undergo a the mandatory Division's urinalysis after deployment to the Philippines. Word got back to the battalion and regimental HQ (through back channel) that they would lose an entire company, to include its officers and staff NCOs if we returned directly and were tested. So we were sent to Range Company, Mount Fuji, Japan for the winter to dry out and get the THC out of the blood stream.

At Fuji, we converted a quonset hut into a company all-ranks club and christened it with a toga party. But the drugs and various venereal diseases were dealt with.

So yeah, the culture runs deep, probably fueled from the horrors of Vietnam, Korea, and WWII.
