MIDDLETOWN — Supporters and opponents of President Donald Trump verbally clashed inside and outside Barnes & Noble on Friday evening during a book signing by Rhode Island native Sean Spicer, a former White House press secretary.

Outside, a small group of opponents held signs, one of which simply said “LIAR” in black letters. As Gino Martinelli of Middletown walked by, he said to the group, “Hey, Trump won.” Members of the group and Martinelli went back and forth for a few minutes before Martinelli, wearing a “Re-Elect Trump 2020” hat, retreated to his car. Upon leaving, he said, “And he’ll win again in 2020.”

Inside, things really got contentious as book-carrying people snaked between rows of shelves waiting for their chance to approach Spicer. A man, identified as Alex Lombard, called out Spicer’s name from across the room.

“Sean, I was a day student at [Portsmouth] Abbey, too, with you,” said Lombard, who is African-American. “Don’t you remember? You don’t remember that you tried to fight me? But you called me a (racial epithet) first.”

One of the half-dozen security members at the signing ushered off Lombard, but not before he said, “I was 14 then. I was a scared kid then, Sean. I’m not scared to fight you now.”

Another man, waiting in line, could be heard saying, “He should be arrested immediately.”

Lombard is a resident of Cambridge, Mass., and a Newport native. He told The Providence Journal he is a member of the Class of 1990 at Portsmouth Abbey. Spicer graduated from the prep school in 1989.

When asked why he attended the book signing, Martinelli said, “I support anyone who worked for Trump, or is in the Trump cabinet. I want to make America great, and I’m tired of all the (expletive).”

Beth Murphy Ward, a Middletown resident, held a sign outside that read, “Liar briefings.”

“This is a bookstore,” Ward said. “There is something in that bookstore that Sean does not have — the books have spines, Sean does not.”

That was followed by a brief exchange with a woman walking into the building.

It seems this guy is setting up a narrative Spicer is racist.

Soros behind it no doubt. Spicer was on Hannity yesterday and said they have canceled a couple signings already due to possible violence.

This is where the dark money goes. Investigators look up every detail, then bribe and/or corrupt someone to create a false unverifiable narrative.

They learned a lot from the Roy Moore election - it was proven one alleged waitress didn't work at the restaurant. They'll be more careful now.

No reporters looking into the claim that Spicer was a bully who picked on poor scared little black kids? How odd. Would seem to be right up their ally.
